We have one of the largest collections of Hibiscus in the Houston area, both in numbers and varieties. With 25 varieties to choose from, you'll find what you're looking for at a fraction of the price you'd pay elsewhere...if you could even find it!
Hibiscus is a tropical plant, and for that reason we grow them in pots in Zone 8B. They'll survive outside just fine through the winter, but they must be brought inside on those few days when the temperature drops below 32 degrees. The plant likes its water, and in a pot it should be watered daily during the heat of the summer, every 2-3 days during the cooler days of spring and fall.
We used to fertilize ours weekly, and we were rewarded with an abundance of exotic and beautiful flowers. When our collection grew to its current size we had to drop back to fertilizing every 2-3 weeks and we still saw plenty of blooms, just not quite as many. It seems the hibiscus knows what it likes but will adapt within reason. But a day without water in July or August will result in wilting or yellow leaves, and dropped buds. Pay attention to the water!
Hibiscus loves full sun. If your plant is consistently producing flowers it is happy and you should keep doing whatever you're doing. If it's not producing try moving it to an area with more or less sunlight.
Walker County Master Gardeners are volunteers committed to education and outreach on a wide variety of horticultural subjects. Our association was founded in 2001 and is part of the Texas Master Gardeners Association.
WALKER COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS
TX A&M Agri-Life Extension
Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.
What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticultural information and education back to their communities. If you are interested in becoming an Extension Master Gardener, contact your AgriLife Extension office.
