Widow’s thrill (Kalanchoe beauverdii) is a climbing or trailing succulent, not the compact florist kalanchoe commonly sold as Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. It is also known as Sotre-Sotry or the chandelier plant.
| Need | Care |
|---|---|
| Light | Bright light with several hours of direct sun, preferably morning or late-afternoon sun. Provide some protection from intense midday sun in very hot climates. Insufficient light causes stretched, weak growth. |
| Watering | Water thoroughly, then allow the potting mix to dry nearly completely before watering again. Water less in winter. Avoid wet soil and standing water, which can quickly cause root rot. |
| Soil | Very fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Add pumice, perlite, or coarse mineral material if the mix stays wet. Use a pot with drainage holes. |
| Growth habit | A slender, branching climber or trailer. It can be grown in a hanging basket, trained on a small trellis, or allowed to spill over a container. |
| Mature size | Commonly about 2–5 feet long, with larger plants potentially reaching 6 feet or more when supported and grown in a long season. It is usually only about 1–2 feet wide unless allowed to branch extensively. |
| Flowers | Pendulous, tubular flowers in shades of orange, red, pink, or purple, usually appearing in clusters near the ends of stems. Flowering is most common in late winter through spring, though timing varies with conditions. |
| Fertilizer | Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength, about once a month. Little or no fertilizer is needed in winter. |
| Frost tolerance | Not frost-hardy. Protect it below about 40°F (4°C). Freezing temperatures can kill stems and leaves, and even brief frost may cause severe damage. |
| Outdoor growing | Suitable year-round outdoors only in frost-free climates, approximately USDA Zones 10–11, with protection from prolonged rain and cold. |
Trim long or bare stems in spring to encourage branching. Cuttings root readily after the cut ends are allowed to dry for several days before planting. Like many Kalanchoe species, it can be harmful if eaten by pets, especially dogs and cats.

WALKER COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS
TX A&M Agri-Life Extension
Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.
What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticultural information and education back to their communities. If you are interested in becoming an Extension Master Gardener, contact your AgriLife Extension office.
