Since it’s 1975 introduction, Acorus gramineus 'Ogon' has been a landscape staple in many American gardens. It’s a glaringly beautiful evergreen perennial with brilliant yellow deer-resistant foliage, brightest from fall through spring. While the overall effect is bright yellow, The foliage actually has a vertical green stripe down the side of each 1/8" wide plasticized leaf. This easy to grow groundcover forms a fabulous 1-foot tall slowly-widening patch...best in moist shade. Its roots have antifungal and antibacterial properties. It thrives in dampness and can even be grown as an aquatic . Acorus is generally considered a non-invasive, slow-spreading, or "well-behaved" perennial in garden settings, rather than a fast-spreading, invasive weed. While it spreads via rhizomes to form colonies, it is valued as an alternative to truly invasive plants.
Walker County Master Gardeners are volunteers committed to education and outreach on a wide variety of horticultural subjects. Our association was founded in 2001 and is part of the Texas Master Gardeners Association.
WALKER COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS
TX A&M Agri-Life Extension
Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.
What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticultural information and education back to their communities. If you are interested in becoming an Extension Master Gardener, contact your AgriLife Extension office.
