Silver squill (Ledebouria socialis) is a small bulb-forming succulent from South Africa. It is grown for its spotted, silvery foliage and unusual underground bulbs.

| Need | Care |
|---|---|
| Light | Bright indirect light to several hours of gentle direct sun. Morning sun or filtered afternoon light is ideal. Strong hot afternoon sun can scorch the leaves, especially behind glass. |
| Watering | During active growth, water thoroughly once the soil has dried out—often every 1–3 weeks indoors, depending on light, temperature, and pot size. Allow the mix to dry substantially between waterings. Water very sparingly during dormancy, usually fall through winter. |
| Soil | Use a sharply draining cactus or succulent mix. A shallow pot with drainage holes is helpful because the bulbs are prone to rot in wet soil. |
| Humidity | Normal household humidity is suitable. Good air circulation is more important than high humidity. |
| Fertilizer | Feed lightly during spring and summer with diluted cactus or balanced fertilizer once every 4–6 weeks. Do not fertilize while dormant. |
| Size | Usually 4–8 inches tall and about 6–12 inches wide. It spreads by producing offsets and can form a dense clump over time. |
| Flowers | Small, delicate greenish-white flowers, often marked with purple or darker stripes, appear on slender arching stalks. Flowering is usually in spring or summer, though mature, well-lit plants may bloom at other times. |
| Frost tolerance | Not frost-tolerant. Protect it below about 40°F (4°C). Freezing temperatures can damage or kill the foliage and bulbs. It is generally grown outdoors year-round only in mild, frost-free climates. |
| Repotting | Repot only when crowded or when the soil has broken down. Keep the upper portions of the bulbs partly exposed rather than burying them deeply. |
The most common problem is overwatering. Yellowing, collapsing leaves, or soft bulbs usually indicate that the soil is staying wet too long. During dormancy, leaves may decline naturally; reduce watering rather than trying to keep the plant constantly lush.

WALKER COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS
TX A&M Agri-Life Extension
Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.
What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticultural information and education back to their communities. If you are interested in becoming an Extension Master Gardener, contact your AgriLife Extension office.
