Plumeria pudica isn't a "named" cultivar of the plant, it's actually an entirely different species of the genus plumeria. Because the leaves are so different, it's also popularly known as "Fiddle Leaf Plumeria." The flowers come in no other color but pure white, in large clusters, giving the plant the nickname of "Bridal Bouquet". They are strikingly beautiful but have little scent.
Pudica behaves and is cared for much like its cousins, with a few exceptions. Pudica doesn't go totally dormant during the winter months, although its water needs drop significantly. While you can tuck away your other plumerias in the garage over the winter, a well-established pudica can remain outside except during an imminent freeze.
Pudica branches always grow vertically, so the plant can become top-heavy if left unpruned. Curiously, each time a branch is cut it will sprout two more out of the amputated limb. Thus, for a fuller and bushier plant the gardener should regularly trim the exponentially growing branches at different levels to achieve the striking "bridal bouquet" effect in the attached photo. You can definitely have some fun with this one!
Walker County Master Gardeners are volunteers committed to education and outreach on a wide variety of horticultural subjects. Our association was founded in 2001 and is part of the Texas Master Gardeners Association.
WALKER COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS
TX A&M Agri-Life Extension
Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.
What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticultural information and education back to their communities. If you are interested in becoming an Extension Master Gardener, contact your AgriLife Extension office.
