The Pencil Cactus, also known as Fire Stick Cactus, is a succulent plant characterized by its tall, slender, pencil-like stems that can reach up to 30 feet in height in optimal conditions. The stems are green but can turn bright red or orange during periods of stress or drought. It's important to note that the sap of this plant is toxic and can cause skin irritation. This plant can make a dramatic addition to landscaping, particularly in arid or semi-arid regions, as well as being an attractive indoor specimen with proper care.
Pot size: 1 gal
Size: Can grow from 3 to 30' depending upon the growing conditions.
Water: The Pencil Cactus requires very little water, especially in the winter months. It’s best to let the soil dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), occasional watering is recommended, but overwatering should be avoided to prevent root rot.
Sun: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Ideally, it should receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to thrive. In less sunny locations, it may become leggy and lose its compact shape.
Walker County Master Gardeners are volunteers committed to education and outreach on a wide variety of horticultural subjects. Our association was founded in 2001 and is part of the Texas Master Gardeners Association.
WALKER COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS
TX A&M Agri-Life Extension
Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.
What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticultural information and education back to their communities. If you are interested in becoming an Extension Master Gardener, contact your AgriLife Extension office.
