Hidden ginger, scientifically known as Curcuma petiolata, is a tropical ornamental ginger plant (not edible.) It's known for its large, canna-like leaves and for having its flowers hidden among the foliage. The plant features large, textured, medium green leaves, resembling those of a canna. The flowers, which appear in summer, are hidden among the foliage, hence the name "hidden ginger".
It's a clump-forming plant that spreads slowly by rhizomes, forming a nice clump over time. Hidden ginger thrives in well-drained, organically rich soil and prefers bright, indirect sunlight. It needs moderate moisture and is sensitive to overwatering. It's a deciduous tropical plant, meaning it's best suited for warmer climates. It can be grown outdoors in USDA Zone 8B.

WALKER COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS
TX A&M Agri-Life Extension
Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.
What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticultural information and education back to their communities. If you are interested in becoming an Extension Master Gardener, contact your AgriLife Extension office.
