Fern-leaf kalanchoe usually refers to Kalanchoe pinnata, also called life plant, air plant, or Bryophyllum pinnatum. It has fleshy, fernlike or scalloped leaves and produces plantlets along the leaf margins.
1 gal size pot
| Need | Care |
|---|---|
| Light | Bright indirect light to several hours of gentle direct sun. Morning sun is ideal. Acclimate it gradually to strong outdoor sun, since sudden exposure can scorch the leaves. In too little light, it becomes tall and weak. |
| Water | Let the soil dry out substantially—usually the top half or more of the pot—before watering thoroughly. Empty the saucer afterward. Water less in winter or during slow growth. It tolerates drought much better than wet soil. |
| Soil | Fast-draining cactus or succulent mix in a container with drainage holes. |
| Size | Usually about 1–3 feet tall and wide in containers; in warm outdoor climates it may become a larger, branching shrub. Flower stalks can add another 1–2 feet. |
| Flowers | Mature plants produce tall stalks of hanging, tubular flowers, typically pink, orange, reddish, or yellow-green. Flowering is more likely with strong light and a seasonal dry period. |
| Frost tolerance | Not frost-hardy. Protect it below about 40°F (4°C); freezing temperatures can kill the foliage and stems. It is generally suitable outdoors year-round only in frost-free climates, approximately USDA Zones 10–11. |

WALKER COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS
TX A&M Agri-Life Extension
Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.
What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticultural information and education back to their communities. If you are interested in becoming an Extension Master Gardener, contact your AgriLife Extension office.
